Government supports the Department of Immigration with brand new vehicles

The Government through the Ministry of Home Affairs has procured over One Hundred (100) brand new motor vehicles, including twelve (12) buses of different sizes, for the Department of Immigration to support its operations.

The twelve (12) buses which are the first consignment of the vehicles procured for the Department of Immigration were presented to the Department by the Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Stephen Kampyongo, on Thursday, 30^th April, 2020 at a ceremony held at Embassy Park in Lusaka.

Speaking during the hand-over ceremony, Mr. Kampyongo commended Immigration Officers, who are among the frontline staff in the fight against COVID-19, for a commendable job. “I stand here as a very proud Minister of Home Affairs to see how courageous our officers have been in the execution of duty” He said.

He reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring the continued modernization of operations in the Department and commended Immigration Officers for embracing new digital platforms being implemented in the Department, which have led to a paradigm shift in service delivery.

The Minister assured the Director-General that His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, was impressed by the Department’s significant contribution to the national treasury through the collection of non-tax revenue. He assured the Department of his Ministry’s continued support. “We will continue to support the Department as it is very critical to the security of the nation. Said Mr. Kampyongo.

He expressed hope that the new fleet of vehicles would go a long way in enhancing the Department’s execution of its mandate, which among others included, conducting operations, both internally and along the border areas and removing undesirable elements from the country.  “The modern buses are a timely gift to the officers, especially in the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, because officers will be able to be transported to their areas of operation in a conducive and timely manner” He said.

The Minister also implored the Director General to secure the vehicles as well as to ensure that they are insured and serviced timely so that they could be utilized for their full value. 

Meanwhile, Department of Immigration Director General, Dr. Denny Lungu thanked the Government and the Minister in particular, for the support rendered.

Dr. Lungu said this was the first time in the Department’s history that every station across the country would have a vehicle of its own and that the vehicle would go a long way in easing the Department’s operations.  He also assured Mr. Kampyongo that the vehicles will be put to good use.
