Zambia and Tanzania Immigration Authorities join hands to address Migration Challenges
The Director General of Immigration, Dr. Japhet Lishomwa has called for collective and concerted efforts to address various migration challenges faced between Zambia and Tanzania and beyond, such as irregular migration, human trafficking and smuggling, mixed migration flows, as well as border security and management.
The challenges posed a serious threat to the human rights and dignity of migrants, the security and stability of both Zambia and Tanzania, and the development and integration of the region. They also demand the adoption of a comprehensive and holistic approach to migration governance that is based on the principles of international law, regional cooperation, and human security.
He said this during the Official Opening of the Heads of Immigration Meeting held on 28th May, 2024 at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre (JNICC) in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
“I would like to emphasise the importance of our bilateral cooperation on migration issues, given that we share a long and porous border and a common history and culture. this inter-state cooperation on migration issues is essential for enhancing the benefits and minimizing the risks of migration for our countries and our people” He said.
He also seized the opportunity to congratulate his Tanzanian Counterpart and the people of the united republic of Tanzania on the historic milestone of the 60th Union Anniversary which was commemorated on 26th April, 2024 and at the same time wished both delegations a Happy Africa Day and praised the two countries for the unbreakable bond. “the foundation of this bond is rooted in our founding fathers, Mr. Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Dr. Kenneth Kaunda who shared a strong belief in Pan Africanism and played a pivotal role in the liberation of African countries” He said.
Meanwhile, the timely and decisive resolution of migration challenges through inter-state engagements and cooperation goes a long way in enhancing security, social interactions and access to economic and investment opportunities by citizens of concerned of the two countries.
Dr. Anna Peter Makakala who is the Commissioner General of Immigration of the United People’s Republic of Tanzania said this in her official opening remarks.
“As we convene here it is our great expectation that, our meeting today will discuss a range of matters pertaining immigration such as facilitation of our people and especially communities along border areas, control and combating of illegal migration, exchange of information and experience and other challenges affecting our border of both countries will be jointly dealt with” She said.
This is the fifth Heads of Immigration Meeting between the two countries and the second one held after the Inaugural Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS). During the 2-day Meeting, the two Immigration Authority among others, developed a Joint Action Plan for the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in areas of migration matters signed during the 2nd Session of the Tanzania-Zambia JPCDS held from 12th to 15th February, 2024 in Zanzibar.
